1384 PARTICIPANTS RAISED $3.3 MILLION IN 60-KILOMETRE
WEEKEND TO END BREAST CANCER
Sunday is 2nd Day in Two Day Event

Walkers will finish the last 30 km of their 60 km journey at the MTS Centre.

(Winnipeg, MB; June 11, 2006) - Yesterday, the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation announced that 1384 participants raised $3.3 million in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer, a two-day, 60 kilometre walk to raise funds for breast cancer research in Manitoba.

Perhaps a little weary from their 30 kilometre trek the day before, 1384 participants in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer, had no problem finding the drive and determination to get up early this morning and continue on the last 30 kilometres of their 60 kilometre journey.

Walkers set out early yesterday morning after a moving Opening Ceremony at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Hours later, they arrived at a “Tent City” erected at Lipsett Hall, where they were greeted by hot showers, meals and entertainment. Hundreds of Volunteers and Crew members are on hand over the course of the two day event to provide support at every level including meals, water and snack stops, gear transport, portable restrooms, safety on the streets, and comprehensive medical services.

“It takes a tremendous amount of planning and hundreds of Volunteers - to be able to look after so many participants and ensure their safety as they wind their way through the city over a two day period,” said Barry McArton, Executive Director of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. “We’ve worked with local authorities with regard to the route and street safety; we’re providing plenty of Pit Stops for Walkers to re-hydrate and refuel; and we’ve got a great volunteer medical response team on hand at all times to help with blisters, dehydration, or any other medical issues.”

“This is the first event of this magnitude in our province - a multi-day event for people wanting to do something really bold in the fight against breast cancer,” said Dr. Dhali Dhaliwal, President and CEO of CancerCare Manitoba. “We are so grateful for the support and are thrilled at how the city and the surrounding communities have come together to make this event the most successful breast cancer fundraiser Manitoba has ever seen!”

Funds collected from The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefits breast cancer research and care at CancerCare Manitoba, an organization dedicated to excellence in cancer care and to enhancing the quality of life for those living with cancer and blood disorders for all Manitobans.  With funding assistance from the Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba supports a comprehensive Breast Health Strategy for Manitoba women. Key areas of this strategy include breast screening, research, treatment, clinical trials, care, and risk reduction/awareness.

“Thanks to the supporters of The Weekend to End Breast Cancer, CancerCare Manitoba can fund a number of exciting initiatives that will benefit breast cancer patients and their families,” said McArton, adding, among other projects, funds raised will be support the development of an innovative imaging system that will aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer.
